Over the last nine incredibly engaging sessions, I've gained a deep appreciation of the meticulous approach required to analyze every sentence thoroughly. Even a slight oversight, such as omitting a serial comma, has the potential to change the intended meaning. Every sentence demands a methodical approach, guided by specific rules taught in the Foundational Skills training and mentoring program. As you grasp the application of these rules, you inch closer to cracking the code of a great edit.
The first course (Essentials of Written English) is so detailed and systematically designed that it addresses almost every conceivable writing/editing error. During each mentoring session, we analyze sentences from actual manuscripts, breaking them down into their structural components (parts of speech). We examine these components and their relationships while evaluating their structure. This intricate task demands unwavering attention to detail, but it becomes more streamlined when you assess these structural elements with the relevant rules in mind. By applying these rules in complex scenarios, you gain insights into how the seemingly complicated process of copyediting can be logically structured and simplified, resulting in clear and elegant writing.
There is still a long way to go and much to learn, and I look forward to sharpening my skills as the course grows more challenging.
